A Lady's Testimonial

Below are the words of a recent student whom I met while instructing at a Babes with Bullets Camp(TM).  I would like to share this with other women thinking about learning to shoot a handgun.

Hello Everyone,

I am writing this to tell everyone about my experience with A Ladies Only Shooting Camp. I attended the camp in Tuscon Arizona. I came to camp more than a little timid of handguns in spite of being a hunter with long guns, bow, and black powder. Also a large issue for me was traveling alone. That said, let me tell you about my time at camp.

The instructors, Kay, Judy, Debbie Keehart, Deb Ferns, and Annette were so kind, caring, not to mention patient!! They put you at ease, answer any question you have, and believe me, I had some doozies.

They never make anyone feel uncomfortable or out of place. Judy was always there including my wallfower self in things. Annette gave me many helpful and practical hints. Deb Ferns is the ultimate cheerleader/princess- boy, can she Bling!! Debbie Keehart kept me laughing, while instilling in me the love of competition, and the courage to go for it.

Kay gave me instruction, and encouragement with her gentle way of pushing you to be the best you can be. She was also a great help with the travel issue. I know I'll recognize her next time at the airport.

All in all, it was an absolute fantastic time. I left Arizona with a new confidence in safe handgunnig, love of steel shooting, and a bunch of new friendships that will last a lifetime.

Ladies, even if you don't think you are interested in trying this, give it a go- you will suprise yourself. If you are interested, I can't say enough about how much you will love it!

An added bonus, my husband is thrilled with my love of handguns, so much that Santa is bringing me a S&W 9mm for X-mas. And you should see the way he looks when we talk about shooting, he's so proud his buttons are poppin'.

Can't wait for camp in April, I'm looking forward to seeing friends and making some new ones. So give it a go- you won't be sorry. Keep shooting safe and keep those steel targets ringing-Geeze! I Love that sound!

In Her Own Words

Why women learning to shoot from other women is a good thing!

A friend of mine purchased a new Springfield 40 caliber semi-automatic pistol.  Never having shot before, he felt lessons were in order and included me.  To be honest I was not keen on going.  The picture I had in mind when he told me about the lesson, was something straight out of Deliverance.  I was pleasantly surprised to meet Debbie with her easy smile and purple gripped Semi-Automatic weapon.  Finally someone who didn't tease me about  shooting with a .38 or a 357 revolver.  I learned so much in that short period of time and I had fun doing so.  I am looking forward to another lesson.  Am I a good shot, hell no, shooting straight with a .38 is not easy, but I am a much more confident shooter and with practice and the lessons learned I am sure that I will get better.  All this is thanks to Debbie's ability as a marksman as well as teacher.

Thank you Debbie,

Ladies Pistol Classes, Women learning from other Women

Ladies, Did you know that more and more women are learning to shoot a pistol?!  It's amazing how popular women's shooting classes have become!

We are finding it's much easier for women to learn from other women shooters, not to mention it's just plain FUN! Our students tell us they feel more comfortable around firearms, safer in handling them and even empowered after taking our basic 101 class.

For those who want to continue their firearms training or just need an avenue for practice, we at HerHandgun offer that too! So gals, go to and sign up for the class that works for you! Kippi and I look forward to meeting you!

Shooting - It's More Of A Blast Than You Think!

Recently I was asked to write about a couple of events I participated in.  One: A couple of  "Ladies Only" shooting camps, and Two: A three day competition.

As I sat down to think about what to write that would be of interest to my readers, I realized that in both cases it really wasn't the part about shooting that made these events special.  Here is what I really want to share with all of you.

I drove down to Tucson to meet up with my fellow instructors, camp coordinator, and 28 lady students who would be looking up to us for instruction for the next 2 1/2 days.  By the end of the camp, the ladies were comfortable with the pistols shooting safely and accurately: but most of all, I saw women form friendships that will last the rest of their lives.  I saw women of all ages find an inner strength they didn't know they had.  I saw emotion of empowerment and confidence surface unexpectedly!

All of this came out of a "learn to shoot camp".  Women were calling their husbands and boyfriends at night filled with excitement about their new found activity.  An activity they could now enjoy with their significant other (and children for that matter).  Single ladies had a whole new world opened to them for something they could do on their own while at the same time have so many supportive people to enjoy it with!

What a joy to know that I was part of this fabulous experience!!  But that was just the beginning.  After the camp, myself and three of the other instructors drove back up to Phoenix where we all stayed at my home while we participated in the three day competition.

Wait, did I say competition?  Yeah, I guess we did compete, but it felt more like a girls' vacation trip.  We had so much fun going to the range, helping each other decide the best way to shoot the courses of fire that I never felt any match pressure at all!  After each day of shooting we continued our fun over dinner then conversations back at my house. At the end of the competition, we gathered our prizes and all headed back down to Tucson to teach another 28 women to shoot.  All those wonderful things that happened in the first camp happened again!  How cool is that!

When it was time for us to go back to our homes/families/lives, we hugged our new friends and our old friends, now dearer to our hearts, happy to know that we will all meet on the range again soon!

To all you ladies who join us, I promise you great instruction on how to safely shoot and build confidence.  But most of all, I promise you fun, a new inner strength, and friendships!  Shooting with other women is an experience you really should give yourself!  That is why Kippi and I started HerHandgun!

We both look forward to making you our new friend!

Blasting in Bali

Well World Shoot XV is now in the "history books" so to speak.  Over 1100 competitors respresenting 54 countries have made their mark on the beautiful island in Indonesia.  I was fortunate to have been one of them!

Here is a list of some of the US winners:

Modified - Jojo Vidanes

Standard - Travis Tomasie

Open Junior - KC Eusebio

Ladies Open - Athena Lee

Teams - Simple, all the official US Teams won Gold!

The Shooting format consisted of 1/2 days alternating morning and afternoon start times.  6 stages were shot each day for 6 days.  3 short courses 8-9 rounds each, 2 medium courses 15-16 rounds each, and 1 field course 30-32 rounds each.

As you can imagine, in order to move 1100 shooters through and keep on schedule; the courses of fire were pretty straight forward.  There were very few options on how to navigate.  Good thing, because we only got 2 minute walkthrus!

Now most will tell you it was an easy match.  Yes, Ive shot more difficult stages; however, we all know that it's quite possible to screw up even the most basic shot.  this match was no exception.  Everyone was gunning to do their most accurate/fastest best!  Of course there were misses and error...."Easy is relative"!

What was easy was getting around the Island and touring!  Our favorite Balinese Travel Agency was stationed at the hotel for the week before the match and all during.  They set up any activity we wanted to do.  The tourguides were very friendly and knowledgeable.  Thanks to them we brought home some very fond memories!

Area 2 2008

Unfortunately this will be a short review as I shot the match while in a jetlag stupper.  (Had only been back from Bali three days!)

As I recall, the stages were fun and  challenging this year!  I heard from many that they enjoyed the match much more than the last few years.  Some of the stages in the past were a little over the top and too memory oriented.  I have always given the crew "creative credit" but sometimes simple and straight forward is better.

So, if you've stopped attending because the stages were to "out of control", you can come back next year!  Note, entries are still selected by lottery but I think the match is worth taking the chance!!

That pretty much wraps up the 2008 Season!

Ladies Firearms Instructor

Have you been thinking about learning how to use a handgun for self defense or maybe just to take up a new activity?  Are you a little intimidated by a gun.  Maybe you don't know who to turn to for information and instruction.

Taking lessons from another lady makes all the difference in the world!  I understand your fears and concerns and I also know how we ladies need to handle a firearm differently than the men.

If you are intersted in learning to shoot, have questions about shooting and or the gear you will need, drop me a line at">  I am more than happy to help you with direction and of course private lessons or small groups!  I think you'll even have fun!

Hooray for Gals with Guns!
